Bossie Awards 2013: The best open source networking and security software

Angry IP Scanner
As much as network admins are reticent to admit it, ping is the most commonly used tool in anyone's network management toolkit. Next on that list might be Angry IP Scanner (aka ipscan). A very lightweight tool supporting Linux, OS X, and Windows, ipscan leverages Java to run without an installer, and it's multithreaded for snappy performance.
ipscan first pings a host to see if it's available. Then it can resolve a host name, determine the MAC address, check open ports, see if a Web service is running, and display Windows NetBIOS information. Scan results can be saved in TXT, CSV, or XML formats. If you know Java, you can customize ipscan by writing a plug-in.

Prey
The Prey Project is a device-tracking application that can keep an eye on your PC, tablet, or phone, regardless of where it wanders off to or with whom. Supporting Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS, this app tracks your device with pinpoint accuracy, using either the device's GPS or an associated Wi-Fi hotspot to zero in on its location.
If your smartphone is lost or stolen, simply send a text message to the device. For tablets or computers, use the Prey Project's cloud-based Control Panel to select the device as missing. The application can then take a screenshot of the active applications, turn on the camera to catch a thief's image, or fully lock down the device.

Kali Linux
Spawned from the trusty BackTrack Live CD, Kali Linux is a Linux distro built-from the ground up to be an all-in-one attack and penetration toolkit. Kali Linux has more than 300 penetration-testing and security-auditing programs wrapped in a hard-candy Linux. All the tools in BackTrack were reviewed for functionality and overlap and pared down to the best and most useful.
Kali continues BackTrack's extensive wireless hardware and USB device support; it supports ARM hardware as well. Kali is completely customizable all the way down to the kernel, so you can tweak it to your specific attack and penetration needs. Beware though, this toolkit was not designed to be used by those unfamiliar with Linux.

ECMS,

Movable Type
One of the first widely used blogging systems, now an open source project, Movable Type mixes blogging with site-management functions to support administration of multiple blogs and multiple websites from a single console. Its high-security architecture makes it less vulnerable to attacks, its template language is sophisticated and powerful, and it can generate pages either statically or dynamically, depending on your needs. The newest version adds an enhanced in-browser HTML editor, support for nginx servers, the PSGI server interface, and site-path restrictions for hardened installations.

WordPress is the single most widely used blogging platform, bar none, and for good reasons: It's easy to set up, it updates and maintains itself, and it has a rich culture of third-party plug-ins and themes. Most important, though, WordPress has been put together with the blogger, rather than the programmer, in mind. It does benefit from some careful post-install tweaking for performance and security, but once that's done, it serves as a platform on top of which a great many different kinds of sites, not just blogs, can be built.

Plone
If the likes of WordPress and Movable Type are too simple or closed-ended, consider Plone, an industrial-strength content management system built on top of the Zope application server and the Python programming language. In addition to blogging and page/asset management, Plone includes events and calendaring, user accounts and discussions, and integration with directory services. Dashboard views can be based on user-group membership, to customize internal views based on department, for instance. Plone is also up-to-date with modern Web standards (HTML5, jQuery, and so on). Additional functionality comes through a whole galaxy of extensions sold or provided by third parties.

Joomla
A halfway house between the ease of WordPress and the power of Drupal, Joomla powers sites like Linux.com and the United Nations. The general flavor of the program is reminiscent of Drupal, with modules for various content types. But the WordPress-ness of Joomla shines through in the user-friendly interface, the rich culture of add-ons for the platform, and in the way the program and its extensions are all able to keep themselves up to date.

Alfresco
Enterprise content management is essential for most medium-sized and large companies nowadays, not to mention government agencies. These companies have Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, as well as HIPAA and maybe FERPA to contend with. While the "freemium" open source business model is still in place, the number of features that are present only in the enterprise edition (such as JMX MBeans) is dwindling. Alfresco 4 adds Activiti workflow, support for Apache Solr as an indexing system, and support for Google Docs, Twitter, and other social integrations. But it's the records management, SharePoint replacement, and open source Java that have us hooked on Alfresco.

CRM,

ERP,

BI,

BPM,

CMS,
Drupal
If WordPress is what Web designers choose, Drupal is what Web developers choose. The highly pluggable, widely deployed CMS is the stuff of many community and corporate presence sites alike. The strength of Drupal is that there is a plug-in for everything and anything. Drupal can provide out of the box what many of the largest CMS and custom corporate presence efforts take hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to provide.
Typo3
WordPress might be the most common content management system in use today, but that doesn't make it the best. For a flexible enterprise solution, look to Typo3. Of course it has the basic CMS features, such as predesigned templates, a WYSIWYG editor, built-in search, and a Web UI, to make it all work. What sets Typo3 apart from simpler alternatives like WordPress is support for AJAX drag-and-drop to rearrange pages in the back end, fine-grained permission controls that can be applied on pages and extensions, dynamic menus, built-in image editing, and management of multiple sites under one administration interface and one set of log-in credentials.

 EMR

Gallery
Is marketing trying to stick you with website development and maintenance? I say give them a way to manage the website themselves and be done with it! To that end, let them use Gallery for posting their photos and images. Gallery features geotagging support, batch editing of images, drag-and-drop watermarking, LDAP and OpenID authentication, and simple blogging functionality. You can use Amazon's S3 storage system to hold all the images for use with Gallery -- just send marketing the bill. There's even a third-party iOS app called viGallery that lets users upload pics from the iPhone or iPad and edit Gallery albums.

Open-source software is not for businesses who want out-of-the-box complete applications, but it makes sense for companies that want to tailor every aspect of the CRM experience from the ground up.

CRM buyers might have very few choices were it not for open-source applications. The CRM field is dominated by huge players such as Oracle Corp. and SAP, and the open-source model is perhaps the easiest way into the CRM market for new companies. Open-source CRM projects have been proliferating; SourceForge Inc. lists 369 active open-source CRM projects. The following 10 open-source CRM solutions have risen to the top of the list.

1. SugarCRM Inc. is the 800-pound gorilla in the open-source CRM category. Founded in 2004 by John Roberts, Clint Oram and Jacob Taylor, the Sugar open-source code has been downloaded more than 3 million times. The company has received $26 million in venture financing and employs more than 100 people. More than 12,000 companies use SugarCRM including Honeywell International, Starbucks Corp., First Federal Bank and BDO Seidman LLP. SugarCRM is written in PHP and is compatible with the MySQL database.

2. SplendidCRM Software Inc.'s development team formed in November 2005. The application is built on the Microsoft platform (Windows, ISS, SQL Server, C# and ASP). Designed for system integrators, SplendidCRM allows administrators to add user-customizable features such as .NET 2.0’s Themes, Web Parts and AJAX. SplendidCRM is positioned as a competitor to SugarCRM, as the two applications share many of the same features. For instance, both offer an Outlook plug-in and the ability to add custom fields.

3. CentricCRM has been around for seven years and has achieved a great deal of stability and robustness. In June 2007, CentricCRM (renamed Concursive as of December 2007) received investment funding from Intel Capital, the venture capital arm of Intel Corp. CentricCRM is aimed at the small-business market, although it has scaled up within Fortune 500 companies. Its more complex features can be turned off if they are not needed, and the administrative console allows for a great deal of customization. The free version comes with five user licenses. Centric CRM is written in Java and is compatible with MySQL databases.

4. Hipergate bills itself as “the most complete open-source Java CRM and groupware.” That’s a lot to pack into a single package, but this enterprise-class application seems to have it all. Its functional modules include collaboration and groupware; contact management; project management and support-issues tracking; an e-shopping module with multiple catalogs and payment processing; a content -management module; mass email distribution and tracking; a corporate library; roles-based security; queries and reports; and more. Written in Java and JSP, hipergate is operating system-independent. Databases with which it is compatible include Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL.

5. Compiere Inc. offers a complete ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and CRM application with support for marketing and sales, human resources, inventory control and more. There is even a full business-accounting package, something often seen in open-source software. Compiere received a $6 million injection of venture capital in June 2006. Compiere is written in Java, JavaScript and PL/SQL, and it is compatible with JDBC and Oracle databases.

6. Vtiger CRM is built upon the LAMP/WAMP (Linux/Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP) architecture, with the main development team based in Chennai, India. Vtiger CRM includes SFA (Sales Force Automation), customer-support and -service, marketing automation, inventory-management, multiple database support, security-management, product-customization, calendaring and email-integration features. It also offers add-ons (Outlook Plug-in, Office Plug-in, Thunderbird Extension, Customer Self-service Portal and Web Forms) and support for other add-ons. Vtiger is written in JavaScript, PHP and Visual Basic. It is compatible with ADOdb, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.

7. CentraView Inc.'s offering is a combination of contact management, SFA and CRM functions. Its source code is J2EE-based and builds on the MySQL database. The first version of CentraView was released in November 2004, for the Linux and Windows 2000/XP platforms. Today, the software is offered in both hosted and downloadable forms. Centraview CRM is written in Java and JSP and is compatible with MySQL databases.

8. XRMS CRM is a Web-based application suite that incorporates human-resources management, SFA and CRM. It is an on-premise solution for the small to midsize company. XRMS CRM includes computer telephony integration and the ability to add plug-ins for programs such as Outlook. XRMS CRM is operating-system independent, and it is written in an interpreted language (PHP). Compatible databases include ADOdb, SQL-based, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and other network-based DBMS.

9. Cream CRM is a multilingual application designed for media organizations. The application tracks sales orders, payments, shipments, services, online and print subscriptions, and the effectiveness of promotional campaigns. Modules allow communication with customers via newsletters, email and a Web interface. Cream CRM is an initiative of the Media Development Loan Fund's Center for Advanced Media in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Cream CRM runs on FreeDSB, Linux and Windows 2000/XP. It is written in Java and JavaScript.

10. Tustena CRM is a Microsoft-centric application written for enterprise-class organizations. It comes in three solutions: On Demand, Business and Open Source. On Demand is the hosted version, while the Business version is installed on clients' site and features tech support. Users who opt for the Open Source version get the source code and can modify it as they wish, relying on the community for support. Tustena CRM is written in C#, ASP.NET and JavaScript. It is compatible with Microsoft SQL Server.
